Health in Europe
Challenges and Opportunities
The WHO European Region’s health status has improved substantially over the last decade. Life expectancy increased, premature mortality, maternal and child mortality declined, the Region was declared malaria free, while maintaining its polio free status.
However, the Region’s heterogeneity remains huge. Inequities are rising both between and within countries, with more than a decade of difference in life expectancy. Multiple challenges affecting health remain, including demographic changes, urbanization, emerging diseases and complex social and political landscape.
